I think a lot of white guilt went into the over-praising of The Wire which is weird to me since it's obviously written from a white guy's perspective (David Simon and most of the other writers).
the other thing that kills me: it was a jocky show. bunch of dudes hangin brains. yet im sure the critical viewership would run over xmastime in a dress to bash a frat. that said, i bet most families with cable in the projects of the district o columbia watched and had no beef with the authenticity. simon is the first to admit his delegation to nonactors and cops.
oh, and that white liberal backlash over white liberal guilt is in most ways worse. see: geraldine.
