can this really be true
if we don't talk about this, it is not true, right?
where was i during the super bowl (at j's, for half-time, just to watch BRUCE) and why am i just seeing this now?
oh, right, i watch tv 2 days a week. and i don't have cable. hooray june and my hd new conversion box. lots to be critical of then, yo.

the crossed leg pose

why do women pose like this? i know it has something to do with making one's hips look smaller, but this girl, whoever the fuck she is, looks like she has to pee. she clearly weighs about 86 lbs. is she really worried that she looks hippy? and i've noticed that it's usually the actresses, and NOT the models who do this.
ladies, please, stand on your own two, equally weighted feet. you look like a drunk 16 year old, standing in line for the ladies room at the holiday inn prom.
jambalaya
another great tasting, one pot dinner.
ingredients:
2 tbsp olive oil
1 1/2 lb chicken (i used organic boneless thighs, cause it was cheaper)
1 lb-ish of andouille sausage
2 c chopped onion
1 c each, chopped celery and green pepper
3 cloves garlic, chopped
2 c long grain rice
1 tsp each: salt/black pepper/paprika/red pepper flakes/thyme
2 bay leaves
3 c HOT chicken stock
1 14 oz can, fire-roasted diced tomatoes
1/2 lb shrimp, shelled and de-veined
1 tsp lemon zest
(you can also had smoked ham and oysters, but cooked oysters kinda gross me out)
first, salt and pepper chicken and brown in large heavy dutch oven
remove to cool, then chop into bite size pieces.
brown sausage in same pan. remove and set aside.
in the same pan, combine onion, celery, bell pepper and garlic. saute until tender, about 5 minutes.

stir in rice and seasonings and saute 3-4 minutes.

add hot stock, sausage, and chicken to rice, cover pan and simmer over low heat until the meats are heated through and the rice is barely tender.

fold in tomatoes, shrimp and lemon zest. Bring to a simmer, cover and let stand off heat about 10 minutes or until seafood is cooked. yum.

adventureland

i absolutely had to see this movie. i come from western pa and grew up in the 80's. the movie takes place in an amusement park near pittsburgh in the 80's. in real life it's called kennywood. it was filmed at kennywood. i have friends who worked at kennywood. why it is called kennywood i have no idea. but here are my thoughts:
1. jesse eisenberg is a menschy version of michael cera.
2. kristin stewart would be a great actress if she stopped playing with her hair. i also couldn't figure out why she was shivering all the time. however, if they shot off-season, western pa gets awfully chilly in september.
3. the director is a fan of eggleston. per the big star album cover presented as almost product placement, and the shots of sad, lonely suburban homes and cars. (love him too)
4. great soundtrack. i love a movie that opens with the replacements.
5. absolutely no western pa accent for anyone. and they had a dialect coach. disappointing.
6. the return of martin starr, whom i love from freaks and geeks.
7. totally unbelievable set of characters who might work in an amusement park:
a. a beautiful and rich nyu student
b. a brainy, menschy oberlin grad, en route to columbia
c. a poor young jewish intellectual who reads gogol
8. ryan reynolds didn't make me want to puke.
9. not nearly enough t&a.
10. nothing particularly original at all.
i would have to conclude that this is a mash-up of the following films:
nick and nora's playlist, flashdance, the squid and the whale, freaks and geeks, the funhouse, and pretty in pink/16 candles.
final thoughts: buy the soundtrack, although you probably already have the singles on your ipod.

food porn
i love food blogs. i could read them all day. restaurant reviews like eatit: the brooklyn food blog or recipe blogs like not eating out in new york.
so i am going to attempt my own entry. here goes.
when i was in college i had a friend from the ivory coast. he had a dinner party one night and made this amazing meal. i made it a few times after that, but had totally forgotten about it until today. apologies for my lack of photographic talent.
"west african peanut chicken"
ingredients (i'm more of a guess-timater, so take these amounts with a grain of kosher salt):
3 lbs chicken breasts or any other part(skins removed)
1/2 cup veggie oil
1 large onion
3/4 cloves garlic
1 can chicken stock
1 can fire-roasted diced tomatoes
1 cup creamy peanut butter
cayenne pepper
red pepper flakes
salt/pepper
parsley
in a heavy dutch oven or stock pot, brown chicken in oil. set aside.

drain out any excess oil. add garlic and onion and saute. scraping up any chicken bits left in the pan.

add chicken stock, tomatoes and seasonings. bring to a boil.

add peanut butter and stir. add chicken breasts and let simmer covered about 45 minutes?

top with parsley and serve over white rice. yummy.

the new york hi-life.
spent the night at a swanky new york city restaurant (thank you new york publication that i cannot mention) with my friend "the reviewer". delicious. free. and yet challenging.
it's much more fun when you can sample the cuisine without feeling like you will be quoted the next day. it's kind of like a job. my most memorable quote, that i can remember: "dude, what is that? kind of looks like an idea for a david lynch film...but, i'll try it."

lessons of isolation. part 1
today i found myself having a conversation with myself (pro and con) regarding the merits of disposable pens. out loud.
anthro pro/con
although i have been known, on occasion, to anthropomorphize the animals in my life, i find it really disturbing to watch commercials that have talking animals, candies, cereal and fast food. i don't want to know that the dollar menu at mcdonald's have board meetings. i want to eat them, not think about what kind of snacks THEY might be eating...and don't even get me started on that talking dishwasher dispenser. gross.

feet.
one of my most hated words. and one of my most hated subjects.
mine are very pretty, but i have spent a life in HATE of feet. therefore, i have developed an addiction to shoes: expensive, hand-crafted boots, manolos, fancy french thick-soled numbers, vintage sneakers, gucci loafers, artisan slippers, etc...you name it, i got the pair. half of which, i've never worn.
i have just spent the weekend working a "podiatry trade show" at the marriott marquis in times square. picked up the gig from a friend who said it was a "pretty easy job" to make some money.
it was a horror show. i was surrounded by fungal toes, flat feet, orthodics, foot surgery...
it was my job to be there and be blonde, have big boobs, and smile and maybe bring in some new business for some mri center. i spent the weekend being groped, fondled, and the recipient of the worst come-ons and passes since ford was in office.
i now have two standing dates: peter luger's and bemonte's. i just felt too guilty to turn these old guys down. because they will be dead within the year anyway.

marley and me
in the interest of the 12 step program, i must admit and apologize. i went to see it today. i read the book (i didn't pay for it...thank you brooklyn library) because my brother recommended it. i enjoyed the book because i lerve dogs. but i was not prepared for what happened today in the little suburban movie theater. maybe it was because i didn't get popcorn.
first of all, i apologize for tearing up at the opening credits. then i laughed and made all kinds of indiscernible sounds during the film. now i apologize to shindler's list for crying harder at the end of this film.
this is not a movie for children, most of whom were surrounding me. this is a movie about family and responsibility and the passage of time. and i didn't even hate jennifer anniston that much. i even started laughing in the middle of my weeping, because i was so self aware, and because the parents around me were trying to console and figure out how to un-traumatize their children. hilarious.
so, the worst marketing campaign ever for this film, but a must see for anyone who has loved a dog...

wow. that sucks like christmas
this holiday (for me) is always so wrapped up in anxiety and longing. i long for the feelings, as a child, that this time of year always aroused in me. there are glimpses: white cotton balls of snow falling on freshly bought christmas presents. listening to charlie brown album while decorating the mantle with garland and pine cones. hanging the christmas/music box ball that was my mother's. hanging the beautiful and elaborate stocking she needle pointed for me.
but i always have this low grade anxiety throughout this time. as if my rockwell christmas will never be attained again.
but this year, my friend theknowall tuned me onto the the santa project at the new york city post office. she picked up a letter for me from a young girl from brooklyn. this was her letter:
"Dear Santa,
Hi! I'm X, I live with my mom and grandma. My mom works in a factory, so she can't buy no present. I'm 9 years old and in fourth grade, I'm a nice girl and student. I need cloth and shoes. My cloth size is L-14 and shoes 4. Please could you give me something. bye I hope you have a merry christmas and a happy newyear.
Sinserly
X"
So, i went out to buy "cloth" and toys and a gift certificate for shoes. wrapped them all and put in a big box which i delivered to the brooklyn post office yesterday, sent priority so it would get there by tuesday. then today i read this.
not sure what to think. except i guess i kind of thought that this sort of thing could possibly happen when i was wrapping the present. it just seems so ugly and so deeply sad. there are thousands of kids out there who sent a letter in good faith and will now be disappointed. i just started crying reading that article. i now realize that this holiday is not about achieving some kind of rockwell-ian mood. it is about giving. and loving.

secretions

"everything that man handles has a tendency to secrete meaning"
marcel duchamp.
so, i went to a book reading last week for the very talented molly mcnett. it was a revelation how great her book, "one dog happy" was. then i had to snooze through one of those award winning writers who reads his work as if he is chekhov, but i held out. shainberg came out and started reading. had no idea where he was going. midway thru his reading i remembered seeing the book in the library and pulling it out, only to put it back again. well, i picked it up again.
it is the best book about boogers ever written.
the inscription is to norman mailer.
i heart new york
on the subway today, i had a gentleman offer to f@#* me up the a##, AND suck my c#@*. he had the chivalry to make clucking noises through his proposal. tempting.
perspective
i'm not a huge fan, but this kinda puts things in perspective. hat tip to gw for the link.

notes on a life

i have a hard time reading biographies and autobiographies. i always take them with a huge grain of sea salt. but seeing this book in the library and remembering how much i loved her documentary film on apocalypse now, i picked it up. yesterday. could not put it down. finished today, after many late hours of reading.
there is something so beautiful about her thoughts, written as if in a diary, which i suspect they were. big props to nan talese as an editor, i'm sure.
she is clearly the opposite of her husband. yet what made this so compelling was her realizations of life in a home dominated by such large personalities; a life that she would not have chosen, if it were not for marriage and children. her simple and exquisite realizations of family, responsibility, her waning creative voice, and grief are just perfectly tuned in this lovely memoir.
this is not a celebrity tell-all. it is a simple recollection of what it means to be a mother, a wife and an artist. in the background.

christmas eve.
i never win anything- lotto, raffles, cock fights, etc. you name it and i haven't won it. so i am loathe to make predictions. but win or lose today i feel part of something. i'm not deluded enough to think this is some second coming i've helped usher in. and i think the president elect is gonna be thrown into a shit storm. i agree and disagree with both candidates in how to deal with it. i've tried to remain balanced, especially toward the end of this historical and ugly election. but god if i haven't been tearing up every 20 minutes today...on my way to the polls, at the polls, watching a three minute clip of obama voting, watching him eulogize his grandmother, reading election voter updates on sully's blog...it's that elusive christmas eve feeling, the one that comes around midnight and makes you forget all the ugly shit you've had to go through to arrive at this night. christmas day always sucks, but christmas eve, oh how lovely.

i'm not mad...
watched the obama "special" tonight.
isn't there something better he can be spending his money on? i mean, who else but me is tuned into network television? (i don't have cable...suck it time warner!)
i found this vacuous infommercial boring and trite at best.
who does this campaign think they are going to win over? i learned nothing new. it was filled with vague talking points, sappy "real" story lines and what i hated most, the soundtrack. they could have done better.
i imagine he will get crucified tomorrow on the blogs...and fox news.
i sat thru most of W. today, but walked out 3/4 of the way through. i have only done this once before. that movie was JFK. total garbage.
i don't like hallmark movies, i don't like propaganda (oliver stone) and i don't like soundtracks telling me what to think.
as my x used to say in the appropriate passive-aggressive manner, "i'm not mad, i'm just disappointed."

vp debate zagat review
this new upstart has raised alot of debate: competing dishes, competing chefs, competing culinary schools and menus. we were looking forward to visiting this place for many weeks. after much turmoil over the perspective cuisine in the past few weeks we could not wait to imbibe.
hear are our thoughts:
first to arrive was an eastern shore crab, appropriately seasoned and worth the wait. this crab has, on occasion, been known to be tasty, seasoned, populist and a total douche. tonight, however, this dish was exactly what we had hoped it would be...a charming meal. it was at sometimes lacking the flavor we had hoped for yet, at the same time, a model dish. it should have stood up for its flavor and its chef more as a whole, considering its experience in the field. it was not everything his executive chef could hope for.
next up on the menu was the alaskan king crab leg. in our past tastings this dish has been frozen, store-bought and inconceivable as a vice president. it is amazing what a kitchen can do. not only was this dish tasty, it packed a punch...a glaring misstep from its detractors. although we would not eat this dish on a regular basis and cannot afford to have it in our executive branch, we have to say, begrudgingly, she delivered. but we are pretty sure that this dish, no matter how rich it appears to be on first bite, gives us the runz.

verbatim

i, like many of you, watched tina fey's genius impersonation last night on snl. if you haven't seen it, please catch it on nbc.com or hulu.com
what i hadn't realized was that much of it was verbatim of the actual interview with couric.
here it is verbatim from cbs news:
COURIC: Why isn't it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families who are struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries; allow them to spend more and put more money into the economy instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?
PALIN: That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health-care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping the—it's got to be all about job creation, too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So health-care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans. And trade, we've got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive, scary thing. But one in five jobs being created in the trade sector today, we've got to look at that as more opportunity. All those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that.
wow. it kind of sounds like me after a few hendricks martinis.

pronunciation
am i the only voter out there who cares about the pronunciation of the country that we are at war with (currently), the country we are about to be at war with, and the country that we used to like but may, at some point, be at war with eventually?
cause this is how it stands with the mccain camp (and most of america):
1. EYE-rack.
2. EYE-ran.
3. PACK-eee-stan.
at least obama knows how to pronounce them. is that the first line of diplomacy?
the second, of course, is... where is the bathroom? that weird middle eastern food went right thru me....

tee hee
from huff post reader:
Since Palin has foreign policy experience due to being able to see Russia from an Alaskan island it makes me wonder if she has had diplomatic talks with Santa Clause being so close to the North Pole.

words i like better than "outraged"
i've really begun to hate this word. everyone i know and don't know seems to be using it these days. although i share their sentiment, i think it's time to check my handy thesaurus and try to help:
1. umbrageous.
2. mortacorpuscled.
3. tipple-miffed.
4. snaggle-tooth-tiggerred
6. perstinkaterd.
7. omfgaufs. (ohmyfuckinggodareuserious)
8. wrangletastic.
9. disembowelled.
10.mcschwiggeded.
ok, that last one i kind of made up, but it's that feeling you get after a few pints, right before you start to feel outraged and your friends have to pull you out of the bar kicking and screaming.
suck it merriam-webster.

classy
anyone notice that the "baby-daddy" last night was chewing gum for the big family finale? don't the republicans have wranglers for that kind of thing? can't someone hold his gum for him while he waves, proudly holding (gripping) the hand of his meal ticket?
his parents should be ashamed. he should be grounded.

why girlz like vampires
i have just read 5 books in the last two weeks about vampires. 3 totally tasty, short and nasty books by charlie huston, and 2 really long books that awakened the v.c. andrews in me (aka twilight, etc).
so here are my thoughts. apologies to the authors for my crude musings.
1. girls like boyz who might, at one point, suck their blood.
2. vampires are always thin.
3. they never get older.
4. they are usually wracked with guilt.
5. they are teases.
6. they are usually way older, even tho they don't look it.
7. they come with really complicated "baggage."
8. they try "really hard" to be polite.
9. they are usually snarky. yet so WISE.
10. they could kill you. if they wanted to. but, usually, they don't.
hmmm...so who actually created the vampire myth? bram stoker or helen gurley brown? or more importantly, is helen gurley brown the oldest living-dead lady vampyre?
dude. look at her. terrifying.

DNC zagat review
(1-5 starz)
monday.
overall, the evening could be described as a yawn, a burp, a nap and a final cherry on top. 2 starz for overall service and presentation. i was very hungry when i went in and left only half full. there were, however, highlights to this lackluster meal. the best choice on the menu was dessert. wrapped in a ravishing pistachio sheath, and tasty beyond belief, this final winner saved the evening. nice presentation, solid and filling. not the best dish i've ever had, but made me want to come back.
tuesday.
a repeated trip to taste the samplings left me feeling better about this new scrappy upstart. luckily i was able to sample the offerings of the fresh delicacies from massachusetts. refreshing, well bodied and sentient. i think this dish has real possibilities. looking forward to see what becomes of this one when given it's proper due. fresh not frozen. 4 starz.
my second course was a thick, juicy montana steak. everything you could want from a good piece of meat. the presentation was big, the taste was big, the cut was big. couldn't finish it, so took home a doggy bag of that big ol' crazazy. 4 starz.
again, dessert ruled this meal. at first glance this looked like a tangerine parfait. beautiful to look at, but probably not going to be very filling. my fellow diners were ecstatic with the presentation, so i eagerly awaited my first bite. it did not disappoint. normally, parfaits are not to my liking. i find them frothy, self-congratulatory and strident. but this dessert lived up to its hype. from the first bite this dish left me feeling excited, moved and i wanted more. an utterly beautiful, powerful and uplifting finish to a very good meal. 5 starz.

really?
OK. here's the deal. i liked edwards. would have voted for him for pres. i don't have a problem with people making mistakes. what i hate are liars. and what i hate more is a qualifying liar whose wife is dying of cancer:
per ABC news:
Edwards said he told his wife, Elizabeth, and others in his family about the affair in 2006.
"She was mad, she was angry, I think furious would be a good way to describe it," Edwards said.
Edwards made a point of telling Woodruff that his wife's cancer was in remission when he began the affair with Hunter. Elizabeth Edwards has since been diagnosed with an incurable form of the disease."
really? well, then i guess it makes it more palatable that she was in remission. hmmm, as long as she had her hair back, wasn't puking in a bucket while being poisoned by chemo to try to save her life, i guess that makes it ok. he must have been going through a really hard time.
fuck you, you sorry piece of shit.

proustian moment
he had his cookie. i have this
i just removed my fixed retainer after flossing and one side became unglued. this retainer was implanted when i was in seventh grade. been told by every dentist to have it removed, but since i don't have "dental" it just seemed too costly. the only thing holding my bottom teeth together now is tartar and regret.

words i hate part 1
1. clam
2. whimsical
3. in a sense (when used all together)
4. perfunctory
5. endive (cause i never know how to pronounce it)
6. worm
7. herb (when pronounced with an H)
8. myriad (cause no one uses it correctly, they always say "of" after)
9. pithy
10. chicanery
if these were used like this i would burn my nipples off:
i hate to be so pithy, but in a sense, i felt like a worm. perhaps it was a bit of chicanery on my part when i created this whimsical recipe of endive and clam salad but it just seemed so perfunctory when i looked at the myriad of herbs staring at me.
please feel free to send your hateful word connections to me. i promise nothing will be burned.

double feature review
thanks to the lax/we could give a shit staff, it's pretty easy to catch a few movies at the 34th street cineplex.
ps. spoiler alert.
1. wall-e:
totally was digging the first part of the movie. i really love big city ghost town movies. at the beginning. then everything always falls to shit. kept thinking this is a movie for adults. what kid would dig watching man's detritus and hello dolly on vhs? as soon as the e.t. lookin robot and his lady speedstick robot (although she also kind of looked like a travel size vibrator) moved up to the "big ship" it became a boring, trite treatise on man's insatiable consumption. but worse than that, it looked like an episode of jimmy neutron. it could have been that i was a bit perturbed by the guy sitting behind me who was either jerking off or kicking my seat repeatedly. rather than giving him the satisfaction of acknowledging him, i moved my seat halfway thru. i really showed him.
anyway, after we have seen the devastation on earth, the toxic dust clouds and storms, the lack of any moving water, except maybe toxic rain, the writer has all the fat jimmy neutrons, who by the way have lost their bone mass, fly back to earth. i'd be like, listen yo, can't we just get some calcium and an exercise bike on this ship?
2. batman deux.
ums, ok. was kind of looking forward to this one. and after my very easy transition into said movie, was settled in for some good old fashioned "blow that shit up."
well the "dark night" is a good moniker, for it looks like it was lit by a mag lite that's juice is running low. and what is it with the batman's voice? does batman have throat cancer? shouldn't he see someone about that? i mean, he's batman, he's gotta have insurance.
also, i have a hard time watching "the sad cartoon turtle"/maggie gyllenhaal since secretary. it's like watching paint dry. with bad posture.
the bloviated story line of anarchy/terrorism/fear mongering/invasion of civil rights felt like an episode of frontline.
don't get me wrong, lots of stuff got blowed up. but it just wasn't that much fun.
i'm all for dark, twisted storylines. but this was so convoluted that i could barely follow it. the best part of the movie was when the batcycle did a 180 at a wall.
ok, so now is the part where i'm supposed to say how fantastic heath ledger was. well, he was. mr. ledger was a gifted, smart, extremely talented actor. he shows his chops in this movie and he is the best thing in it.(except for that batcycle bit.) but i don't understand all the reviews that extol him for going "so dark." freddy krueger was dark. that dude from saw was dark. that spanish dude in pan's labyrinth was dark. they are all great performances. i think mr. ledger was doing his job well. and i think he should be remembered, albeit posthumously, for that. it is a shame that this movie left him, literally, hung out to dry.
andtheend.
ps. spoiler alert.

totally was digging the first part of the movie. i really love big city ghost town movies. at the beginning. then everything always falls to shit. kept thinking this is a movie for adults. what kid would dig watching man's detritus and hello dolly on vhs? as soon as the e.t. lookin robot and his lady speedstick robot (although she also kind of looked like a travel size vibrator) moved up to the "big ship" it became a boring, trite treatise on man's insatiable consumption. but worse than that, it looked like an episode of jimmy neutron. it could have been that i was a bit perturbed by the guy sitting behind me who was either jerking off or kicking my seat repeatedly. rather than giving him the satisfaction of acknowledging him, i moved my seat halfway thru. i really showed him.
anyway, after we have seen the devastation on earth, the toxic dust clouds and storms, the lack of any moving water, except maybe toxic rain, the writer has all the fat jimmy neutrons, who by the way have lost their bone mass, fly back to earth. i'd be like, listen yo, can't we just get some calcium and an exercise bike on this ship?
2. batman deux.
ums, ok. was kind of looking forward to this one. and after my very easy transition into said movie, was settled in for some good old fashioned "blow that shit up."
well the "dark night" is a good moniker, for it looks like it was lit by a mag lite that's juice is running low. and what is it with the batman's voice? does batman have throat cancer? shouldn't he see someone about that? i mean, he's batman, he's gotta have insurance.
also, i have a hard time watching "the sad cartoon turtle"/maggie gyllenhaal since secretary. it's like watching paint dry. with bad posture.
the bloviated story line of anarchy/terrorism/fear mongering/invasion of civil rights felt like an episode of frontline.
don't get me wrong, lots of stuff got blowed up. but it just wasn't that much fun.
i'm all for dark, twisted storylines. but this was so convoluted that i could barely follow it. the best part of the movie was when the batcycle did a 180 at a wall.
ok, so now is the part where i'm supposed to say how fantastic heath ledger was. well, he was. mr. ledger was a gifted, smart, extremely talented actor. he shows his chops in this movie and he is the best thing in it.(except for that batcycle bit.) but i don't understand all the reviews that extol him for going "so dark." freddy krueger was dark. that dude from saw was dark. that spanish dude in pan's labyrinth was dark. they are all great performances. i think mr. ledger was doing his job well. and i think he should be remembered, albeit posthumously, for that. it is a shame that this movie left him, literally, hung out to dry.
andtheend.
suck it pbs' john adams
i know i've sent this to many of you. but i would like it to reach the masses. the reenactments are the best part.
hat tip to emma for sending it my way.

mia review

so, to escape the heat e and i went to the atlas park mall to check it out. you could not pay me to stay away from this movie. been jonzed for weeks. i lerve meryl. and i lerve mr. darcy. (you pride and prej and b.j.d. fanz know what i'm talkin'bout)
so here are my thoughts:
1. it was directed by a third grader.
2. the daughter is 20. so, that means roughly born in 1988. what up with the 70's popstar outfits? and i'm pretty sure all the "adults" are late 50's+.
3. don't sit in handicapped seats to a sold out movie. the trailers are way tense when you're waiting to get thrown out by granny and a cane. (we ended up sitting on the floor)
4. the first third of movie is cringe-worthy. it's like watching/hearing your parents fart at your high school graduation. really loudly.
5. totally grew on me after james bond started singing dreadfully. then fell in love with it.
6. mr. darcy is a gay.
7. i will never be able to watch breaking the waves again.
8. everyone made an ass out of themselves. but they did it without looking miserable. except christine baranski.
9. cried. and cried some more.
10. great to see an actress who can't really sing, emote so beautifully in "the winner takes it all." she got all meryl on my ass.
11. the ending was genius. everyone was singing in the audience. even granny with the cane.

mad wo(men)
for those of you who enjoy "mad men", here is the original female version. HOT!
cigarettes and cocktails for dayz. hats, gloves, and improbably cinched waists. suicide and miscarriages. joan crawford in a performance so soaked with vodka you can smell her thru the screen. hope lang, minus the professor. louis jordan, for christ's sake.
what else can i say, it has the best of everything.

you can check it out free on hulu.com

sm(art)
i loved this article in today's times.
i once bought a very expensive bike lock there and while i was waiting in line i found a 20 dollar bill stuck in the mishmash at the checkout counter. it might not have been considered art, but it was genius.

the end. of an era.

i love to throw parties. spend weeks preparing.
had my annual 4th of july party. knew that the view from the roof would not be as great as it has been over the last few years due to construction on union. still, i thought we would have a great vantage point for optimal fireworks viewing.
after an early set up in the afternoon to set up table, etc. on the roof, i went down to prepare the evenings nourishments and put my face on. cut to 6 pm trip to roof to set up flag tablecloth, candles, chairs, etc... find door bolted and padlocked. party to start in one hour. what does a gracious party hostess do after she has planned this for weeks? anxiety attack. after many attempts to get lock off (thanks SL!) and several vodka tonics later, found a way to get roof access around the other corner entrance to building. all guests were good sports. fireworks ensued. yet, hostess was gripped by sadness and loss of times gone by. yes, change is good. all part of life and that shit. but even the fireworks were disappointing. think that's it for roof parties. thank god for a junior miss tape (thanks em!) and blueberry pie (thanks jw!).

remembrance of things past
i spent much of the day polishing silver. it was one of the most satisfying experiences i've had in a long time. granted, it is/was my mother's silver. bowls, cigarette boxes, wine holders, candlesticks, my baby cup. i would have pulled out the flatware too, but couldn't reach the box in the closet. and with every stroke and bit of polish a little bit of my mother came out. remembrances of where, with care, she placed them in the family home. remembrances of how they were used on special occasions. dinner parties, holidays, weddings, baptisms. as they began to shine so did the remembrance of her.
top girls
went to see top girls tonight at mtc. thanks t for the tickets!
i'm still trying to figure out how i feel about it, which is usually a good sign because clearly it has stayed with me. it is complex, infuriating and polemical at times, incomprehensible at others. so, i think i really loved it. the play, that is. there are some genius performances. mary beth hurt should be given an award for the most delicious performance in the shortest scene ever played by one of america's greatest actresses. truly subtle, understated and heartbreaking. exit applause. elizabeth marvel created a character that is at once reprehensible and yet achingly endearing, all the while dressed in the greatest and most unflattering 80's attire. the costume design was astounding.
the last act is a masterful piece of writing. family recrimination, sisterly rivalry, 80's politics, or more specifically thatcherism and reaganism, are dissected and eviscerated. yet the sin is that marisa tomei is way out of her league or at least her comfort zone. i think ms. tomei is a talented actress. but not as a dowdy suffolk working class mom. however, i do give her props for sporting fanny padding and mom jeans. it was like watching a child who has been raised by wolves. she knows how to ride with the pack, yet doesn't know how to kill with her teeth.
all in all, it is a GREAT play. and for me, that means it made me think.

addendum to sex and the shitty....
yet, i find Rescue Me, which is arguably the most misogynistic show on television/cable, really compelling.

sex and the...um...shitty

yeah, not so much else i can say. maybe because i was hormonal, i really liked the first 45 minutes. and then i found it was the most fatuous, bloated painted turd. and then i really got angry. on every account it was hateful toward women. clearly written by a gay man. i would have rather burned my nipples off than sit through the last hour of that manipulative, misogynistic piece of crap, were it not for my 5 dollar bag of popcorn. which was delicious.
i cannot even watch the tv show on free cable anymore. it makes me throw up a little in my mouth. curiously, it tastes like popcorn....

cyd charisse (1921-2008)
a great article on one the great dames of dance who died this week. legz for dayz.
money quote:
"Late one night on television, I caught Astaire and Charisse doing “Dancing in the Dark” from The Band Wagon. As I watched the two of them dance with each other, I suddenly felt, with total certainty, that life can’t possibly be completely meaningless, not if something like Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse dancing together was created and still exists. That must mean something, I thought."

this is what happens if you let baby out of the corner

this is the writer and "creator" and producer of the painted turd soon to be seen on stages all over the u.s.
things took a bad turn yesterday when this idiotic shrew began directing an aspiring young black singer. apparently there is a rousing rendition of "we shall overcome" in the show led, of course, by the plucky young black waitress. she asked the young woman if she was familiar with "the civil rights movement." she then began to explain "the black experience" to said actress.

st. eligius
is it me, or was this the best hospital show ever? except, of course, the final dream sequence episode. been watching on the hulu.com. it is genius. pilot episode had de-doo doo de and thunder road. i forgot that all females (including me) in the eighties weighed less than 100 pounds (thanks coke!) and that no matter how old you were, you always looked like you were in your late 30's. except for the old dudes.
now i remember why i had such a crush on david morse.

nobody puts baby in a corner
but they can surround her with really gay chorus boyz.
working this week as a reader for the national tour of dirty dancing (the musical?). HI-larious. Not only did i get to sit through a dance call surrounded by the tightest asses i have ever seen (some wearing ill-fitting dance belts) but then i got to read with a few johnnies. try doing the following scene with a guy who looks like nadia comaneci and sounds like paul lynde:
BABY Have you had many women?
JOHNNY What?
BABY Have you had many women?
JOHNNY Baby, come on.
BABY Tell me. I want to know.
JOHNNY No, no... (JOHNNY begins to pace around, trying to put into words things he’s never said before.) You gotta understand what it’s like, Baby. You come from the streets and suddenly you’re up here and these women...they’re throwin’ themselves at you...and they smell so good...and they really take care of themselves. I mean, I never knew women could be like that, you know? and they’re so rich, so goddamn rich. You think they must know about everythin’...
(BABY is trying to understand--hates this.)
...and they’re slippin’ their room keys in my hands, two and three times a day, different women...so, here I think I’m scorin’ big, right? For a while you think, hey, they wouldn’t do this if they didn’t care about me, right?....
oh, this shit is sooooo good. tomorrow they sing. i'm in heaven. although i've chewed off the inside of my mouth trying not to laugh.

fashion choices.
so for the most part i dress like a 13 year old boy. usually it's like some boy that went to groton or choate. in 1978. crumpled men's shirts. well-worn jeans or khakis. old school adidas sneakers. when i do dress up i do it up right. believe me, i own some beautiful manolos. but i've decided i feel sexiest when i'm wearing what i think is most sexy on a man. saw a man tonight dressed like me and all i could think of was how sexy i would look in his shirt in the morning. of course i would then steal it. sticky fingers, as my friend g would say....
i been hypnotized.
and it don't work. smoked again. hate myself. feel tightening and numbing in my left arm. heart disease? luckily that is not in my family. (i.e. the cancer family.) went running and thought i would cough up a diseased lung. kind of hoped i would. think of the weight i would lose.
i'm done with this addiction. especially now that it costs $37 bucks for a pack of cancer sticks. it's gross. no one does it anymore. i feel like an anomaly. i'm just too pretty for this. and the end.

the blacks
funny how depression can spring up on you. spent a beautiful wknd with family and a friend at beach house. woke this morning with such dread. could barely make it out of bed. and the weather made it worse. beautiful. 70 degrees. just asking me to go for my bi-weekly run.
stayed in my short term apt. all day. sitting in my own filth. watched tv for 6 hours. cried like a fat girl in a bathing suit contest. heard a bagpipe outside my window. looked out to find a funeral march. had to rally myself at 6 pm to do my play. a play about women....who die. which is actually really fun and a pleasure to do. the women i've met and the women whose story it's been based upon are a blessing. i know that i am blessed. but it doesn't make wakin up any easier....

hate the set up. canadian style? but i love this song. without the grateful dead chick in the background. please don't look at the video. just turn your eyes away....

tinkle talk
a new idea i have for a chat show.
a host in a women's bathroom stall hosts a chat show with women who are peeing. i think it is the last reality show left available. perfect for a.d.d.ers everywhere. conversations last only about 13 seconds. all the camera work will be done on the ladies feet. no faces shall be shown.
show me a million dollars BRAVO. or LIFETIME...

my home town.
got this from my cousin. note the amount of harley/hockey/hair bands and hot high school girl shots. and the requiem for a dream soundtrack. i have no idea who made this but i lurve it. it's like ken burns on speed. johnstown ROCKS! start plannin your next vacation bitches!
gloria grahame

here's a great article about one of the great unsung actresses of our time.
"oh, this old thing? Why, I only wear it when I don't care how I look..."
delayed reaction
hanging out with my cast over drinks and a baseball game on the tv. pouring rain outside, hear a sound that is either thunder or a really bad car accident. look out the window, can't really see anything because of tree cover, but can see cars veer around something. know in my heart it is an accident. get back from the window, pour another drink. one of my friends gets up from the sofa, takes his phone and goes to check out the scene to see if anyone needs help. i watch him leave. and i think, what happened to me? why am i not doing the same thing?
turns out, he was the first person on the scene to call 911. this was several minutes after accident. jaws of life are required. everyone ok. but what happened to me?

new favorite band.
saw these dudes in a weird gallery in the middle of an old mill area of baltimore. they are from providence. i think they are just old enough to have their drivers' permits. but they are good. real good.
especially Baltimore Blues No. 1. And Diamond Rings. give it a listen. you won't be disappointed.
